Ryan Murphy Reveals Title and Teaser for 'American Horror Story' Season 9
Prepare for chills!
On Wednesday, Ryan Murphy revealed the title of the upcoming season of American Horror Story by way of a spine-tingling new teaser clip on Instagram. Season 9 of FX’s anthology series will be titled 1984 and, judging by the promo, this season aims to pay homage to a golden era of the horror genre.
Set to Billie Eilish’s sultry track "Six Feet Under," the clip shows a woman running frantically through the woods at night. Stalking behind her is a hulking masked man brandishing a huge kitchen knife.
Finally, the woman takes shelter in a wooden structure. However, just as she’s catching her breath while leaning against a wall, the blade of the assailant’s knife slices through the wood not far from her head.
Fans of classic slashers will recognize Murphy’s team borrowing elements from films such as Friday the 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came to theaters in 1984.
Although Evan Peters has already announced that he will not be returning for the upcoming season, Murphy has revealed that Emma Roberts, another frequent player in his shows, is once again returning to AHS. And she’s getting an Olympian for a boyfriend!
In February, the acclaimed showrunner posted a photo of renowned skier Gus Kenworthy cracking a smile along with the caption: "That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts’ boyfriend on 'American Horror Story' Season 9."
Murphy has also previously told ET that the witches featured in the third season, Coven, as well as the most recent season, Apocalypse, will be returning to the series. However, it won’t be for season 9.
"The witches will be back," Murphy said, referring to characters played by Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe and Lily Rabe. "Not next season. But we have something really fun planned."
The series has already gotten the green light for a 10th season, so there's plenty of reason to believe Murphy can fulfill this promise.
